A little bit about me, and my writing

I’ve been making a full-time living as a writer since 1985, when I moved to Ottawa to work as a reporter.

I was in my early 20s, and I was hooked. I continued to work as a journalist in the ensuing years, and retired from CBC News in late 2025, having worked for a decade as a senior producer in St. John’s. My focus was largely digital news, and I’ve had the good fortune to be a trainer with CBC, working with teams in every corner of the country.

Most of my bylined articles at CBC News can be found here. I wrote and/or edited thousands of stories during the years, and wrote a weekly column called Weekend Briefing, on topics ranging from the always rocky economy in Newfoundland and Labrador to the importance of lighting to urban design. My writing included obituaries on many notable figures, including John Crosbie, Mary Pratt, Andy Wells and Bob Cole.

Near the beginning of my reporting career, I wrote for The Sunday Express in St. John’s, specializing in politics, business, crime and culture.

My full-time CBC career started in television, although my contributions to CBC Radio go back to the 1980s. I was a reporter at Here & Now, helped launch the documentary series Soundings, and was researcher and a producer on the 1997 documentary series East of Canada. In the late 1990s, I worked as an editor at The Telegram, and continued to write a column on digital culture — Surf’s Up — for many years after I left the paper. As a freelance writer, I contributed to numerous publications, including Maclean’s, Time, Atlantic Insight, the Medical Post, CMAJ and WebMD.

After I rejoined CBC in 2001, I worked in television news for several years, and then largely with online news. In radio, I had the pleasure of guest-hosting on numerous occasions, for the St. John’s Morning Show, Radio Noon/CrossTalk and On The Go. I fronted an episode of Land & Sea in 2003 about geology (read a blog post here about its subject, the late scientist Hank Williams), and have been and remain a recurring trivia guest for CBC programs, most recently The Signal.

My writing now is focused on posts for this website, my Substack and at least one fiction project. Stay tuned for more on that!
