Folding in the cheese (with Lego)
There was a lot of grief in the wake of Catherine O’Hara’s death, but there were also great memories, and from those a lot of laughs and shared joy.
One thing that has delighted me is animator Trevor Carlee’s Lego version of the “fold in the cheese” scene from Schitt’s Creek, which you can see above.
This is from the second season episode “Family Dinner,” written by David West Read (who went on to write the musical & Juliet). This is the episode in which Moira and David try (and fail) to make enchiladas, and we realize the limits of Moira’s parenting, not to mention David’s ability to learn.
The scene has always been funny (I referenced it in my tribute to Catherine O’Hara), and seeing it recreated in animated Lego just elevates the absurdity.
I love the little details: the stubble on David’s face and his cringey-smile, Moira’s glasses, the cooking direction on the “paper” Lego Moira is holding.
Another version has been a real viral hit this week. It’s a side-by-side comparison, in which you can see see how exacting the details are (David’s apron, for instance). More than a million people have watched this version so far on YouTube alone; his Facebook feed has racked up more than 2 million views combined.
